12-12-12. It's interesting that this is the last time we'll see a repeating date like this, isn't it? And what a cool birthday it's gonna' be for babies born on that day.
This made me think about how we repeat dates ourselves. At the beginning of each new year, we make resolutions for ourselves or our businesses that somehow this year will be the one where we make all kinds of changes, where we get out of a "Groundhog Day" type of living.
But we often don't make those changes... at least not sustainably.
Ready to have a different day? How about a different year?
This is the first of a 10-part blog series for Anti-Groundhog Day living - welcome!
Step 1: Look at what you've accomplished over the last year.
Most of us are really good at remembering what went wrong, rather than what went right for us. When I ask my clients, "How was the last year for you?" most of them say they're glad it's done!
Think about the last time you were recognized for what you did, when you felt appreciated. I would bet it wasn't YOU who recognized or appreciated what you've accomplished;-). Think about a day when you had a huge to-do list. You checked off 90% of the list. What did you say to yourself? "YAY, ME!" or "Gee, look at what I have left to do:-(." If you sort of beat yourself up, you're certainly not alone. Most of us say the latter.
So today, I'd like you to spend just a few minutes remembering all the good from the last year - everything you accomplished - everything you're proud of. (Hint: look at your calendar for ideas... )
It can be a small accomplishment ("I cleaned out my closets and donated extra clothing to a shelter) or ("I finally can work with Mr. Scrooge") or a big accomplishment ("I started a new business and am helping more and more people every month, while making more money.")
To spark ideas, ask yourself the following questions:
- Did I save any money?
- Did I volunteer?
- Did I launch a new product?
- Did I build a relationship?
- Did I resolve a conflict?
- Did I encourage anyone?
- Was I grateful?
- Did I read any books and apply anything from them?
- Did I attend any conferences/training?
- Did I achieve business goals?
- Did I earn any extra money?
- Did I make any investments?
- Did I help a friend?
- Did I help my family?
- Did I work out?
- Did I advance my career or business?
- Did I find ways to reduce stress?
- Did I connect with more people?
- Did I deepen my faith?
- Did I help my community?
Write down at least 12 accomplishments over the last year (OK, that's only one a month.) And if you think of more than 12, write them down, too! No limits:-)
We are not used to recognizing ourselves, but give it a try and see what you come up with. I promise it'll be worth it - this exercise is really a LOT of fun!
So there you have it, the first step to Anti-Groundhog Day living for 2013:-) The next step is coming up next week.
Share a couple of your accomplishments in the comments below - we'd love to hear!
My top two:
<3 Connecting heart-to-heart with 200 more people.
<3 Helping a client make significant changes in her life - including making more money and establishing healthy boundaries in her relationships.
Hugs for a #HappierYear!
